Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah Unveils 1,000 Google Scholarships for IT Education in Public Universities
Karachi, August 2024 — In a landmark initiative to foster digital literacy and technological advancement, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced the distribution of 1,000 Google Career Certificates scholarships across 10 public universities in the province. This move is part of a broader effort to equip the youth with essential IT skills, empowering them to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
During a ceremony at the Chief Minister’s House, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Tech Valley Pakistan and the Universities & Boards Department, CM Murad highlighted the critical need for students to embrace Information Technology (IT). He emphasized that the diverse skill sets available in IT, such as e-marketing, artificial intelligence (AI), animation, and web design, are vital for securing employment and fostering self-sufficiency.
“The IT sector offers vast opportunities for our youth to develop careers that can be pursued from anywhere in the world, even from home,” said CM Murad. He further noted that the initiative aims to bridge the skills gap, ensuring that students from public universities in Sindh can compete on a global scale.
Empowering Female Students
Notably, 50% of the scholarships are earmarked for female students, ensuring gender inclusivity in the drive towards technological empowerment. The participating universities include prominent institutions such as NED University of Engineering and Technology, Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, and Sindh Madressatul Islam University, among others.
Google Chromebooks and Educational Tools
In addition to the scholarships, the MoU outlines the deployment of Google Chromebooks across Sindh’s educational institutions. This initiative, in collaboration with the Education Department, aims to enhance the learning experience by providing students and teachers with modern, user-friendly technology. The lightweight design and long battery life of Chromebooks make them ideal for educational settings, ensuring that students have reliable access to digital resources.
The CM also received a briefing on the success of the Maqsad App, an educational tool leveraging Google technologies. The app has demonstrated significant positive outcomes, with students reporting a 24.3% increase in test scores after just one month of use.
Global Competitiveness through IT Certifications
The scholarships will provide students with internationally recognized IT certifications, positioning them to contribute to Pakistan’s growing technological landscape. “This initiative is a step towards creating a future-ready workforce, capable of driving innovation and technological growth in the nation,” read a statement from CM House.
By prioritizing IT education and digital tools, Sindh’s government is taking decisive action to prepare its youth for the challenges of the 21st century, ensuring they can contribute effectively to the global economy.
