Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi strengthens crime Fighting Efforts

In a decisive move to Combat rising Crime rate and Enhance Community safety, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced the deployment of 4,000 Crime Prevention Wardens (CPWs) acros the province.This Initiative, effective from May 1, 2023, aims to bolster law Enforcement and restore peace in high-Risk areas such as townships, informal settlements, and hostels.

A New Era in crime prevention:


Premier Lesufi Emphasized that the Deployment marks the Beginning of a “new era of delivering” on the Government’s commitment to Public safety.Their responsibilities include ensuring police visibility, addressing Criminal activities in schools And Public spaces, and promoting community-based policing. The CPWs are tasked with Patrolling Communities 24/7, working in tandem With the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Traffic, and Metro Police Departments.

Comprehensive Training and empowerment:


The CPWs have Undergone rigorous training, Covering areas such as human rights, firearm competence, Drone operation, crowd control, and anti-land invasion tactics. Additionally, the wardens have been Granted Peace Officer status, empowering them with the Authority to make arrests, execute Warrants, and testify in court.This comprehensive Preparation ensures they are Equipped to handle various security challenges effectively.

Integration of Technology in Policing:

To enhance their Operational Capabilities, the CPWs will Utilize advanced technology, including drones, Helicopters, and e-policing solutions such as CCTV with facial recognition and e-panic Buttons. These Tools are designed to improve Response times and deter criminal activities in real-time. The Integration of technology aims to Create a more Connected and responsive Law enforcement network across Gauteng.


Community Engagement and support:


Premier Lesufi has called on Residents to actively Participate in Community safety programs and support the CPWs in their Mission. By Fostering a Collaborative approach Between law enforcement and the Community, the Initiative Seeks to Build trust and Ensure Sustainable crime prevention Efforts.


Future Expansion and Sustainability:


The Gauteng Government plans to Expand the CPW Program by Recruiting Additional Wardens, With a Target of 12,000 in the Near Future. These Positions will offer Permanent Employment Opportunities, Including roles such as Drone and Helicopter pilots. The Initiative also Aims to Address youth Unemployment by Providing Training and Employment in the Security Sector.
