The Undertaker’s Way of Saying Goodbye Was Different

John Cena is having planned goodbye shows. But The Undertaker left wrestling in a different way. His last match was against AJ Styles in 2020 at WrestleMania. It was like a movie, and it happened when things were tough in the world. He didn’t say it was his last match then. He said he was retiring later that year at Survivor Series. This was quieter than Cena’s goodbye shows. It makes us ask: Could The Undertaker have had goodbye shows like John Cena?

What The Undertaker Thinks About Cena’s Goodbye

The Undertaker said, “You know, usually you don’t plan your goodbye shows. But it’s cool for someone who was so important to wrestling to go out and let many people see him live. I think this might be how WWE stars say goodbye in the future, like Sting did in 2024.”

This shows that maybe more wrestlers will have planned goodbyes in the future.

Why Goodbye Shows Like Cena’s Might Not Have Worked for The Undertaker

Even though The Undertaker thinks Cena’s way is good, he also thinks it would have been hard for him. This is because of his “Deadman” character.

When someone asked if he could have had a final run like John Cena’s, The Undertaker said, “I think it would have been harder for me… Looking back, it would have been cool. But I don’t know if I could do it with The Undertaker character. What would I do? I can’t hug the fans; I couldn’t do those things.”

This honest answer tells us that it’s hard to keep a certain character, especially one like The Undertaker who was serious and scary. Unlike Cena, who talks to the fans and is friendly, The Undertaker’s character was mysterious and strong.

The Undertaker’s Character vs. How John Cena Connected with Fans

The main reason The Undertaker thinks he couldn’t do what Cena is doing is because of their characters. Cena’s saying, “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect,” helped him connect with the fans. So, having goodbye shows where he interacts with fans makes sense. But The Undertaker’s character was about being supernatural and quiet. Imagine The Undertaker meeting fans and giving speeches every night – it just wouldn’t fit his character. This is why The Undertaker believes goodbye shows like Cena’s would have been difficult for him.

Will More WWE Stars Have Goodbye Shows Like Cena’s in the Future?

Even though The Undertaker has his own reasons, he thinks John Cena’s goodbye shows might change how WWE legends leave. Cena’s shows, like Sting’s before him, can be a plan for stars who are okay with a more public and longer goodbye. This might happen more often, letting fans celebrate their favorite wrestlers for a longer time. But, as The Undertaker said, if this works depends on the wrestler’s character and if they are comfortable being themselves.

What We Learn from The Undertaker’s Thoughts

  • He likes how John Cena is saying goodbye to the fans.
  • The Undertaker thinks his “Deadman” character made it hard for him to do the same because he couldn’t really interact with the fans in the same way.
  • Cena’s goodbye shows might mean that more wrestlers will have longer farewells in WWE.
  • Whether a goodbye tour works depends on the wrestler’s character and what they want.

What Does This Mean for WWE and Its Big Stars?

The Undertaker talking about John Cena’s goodbye shows makes us think about how WWE honors its legends. Not every wrestler can or will choose to say goodbye like Cena. But it’s important for WWE to give good send-offs to those who have given a lot to wrestling. As wrestling changes, how its stars say goodbye might change too.
