Devastating Crash

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171—a Boeing 7878 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick—crashed just after takeoff from Ahmedabad in western India. The aircraft carried 230 passengers and 12 crew members. It lost altitude less than a minute after leaving the runway, around 625 feet, before plunging into a residential and medical campus in the Meghani Nagar district .

Casualties & Survivor

Tragically, 241 people on board lost their lives. There was also significant loss of life on the ground, with at least 24 victims in the crash zone. The total death toll has reached 269, including both passengers and residents Miraculously, only one person survived – a British passenger, later named Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who was seated in 11A. He walked away from the wreckage and was rushed to the hospital with injuries

Victims & Damage

Onboard were 169 Indian, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian national  The aircraft crashed into the B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital grounds, striking residential buildings and a cafeteria, killing at least five medical students and many others . Over 60 people were injured on the ground.

Rescue Operations

Emergency teams from India’s NDRF, IAF, BSF, NSG, and local units responded swiftly. A Mayday call was issued just before contact was lost . Firefighters fought intense fires fueled by the jet’s fuel. Thick smoke was visible across Ahmedabad as residents and emergency workers rushed in to help .

Investigation Underway

Both India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and international agencies—the NTSB (US) and AAIB (UK)—are investigating. The aircraft’s flight data recorder (black box) has been recovered  Authorities are exploring possible causes such as mechanical failure, pilot error, or other factors .

Global Response

World leaders—including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and King Charles III—offered condolences and support  Air India and Boeing, the aircraft’s manufacturer, pledged full cooperation with ongoing investigations .
