Kenya to Receive Share of Sh58.5B Global Polio Eradication Fund in Main Health Boost

Kenya to Receive Share of Sh58.5B Global Polio

Kenya is set to benefit from a Sh58.5 billion international polio eradication fund marking a main milestone in the country’s public health journey. With funding expected to flow from international health leaders like WHO, UNICEF, Gavi and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this financial boost will support critical programs such as National Immunization Days (NIDs), cross-border vaccinations, and enhanced disease surveillance across Kenya’s high-risk regions.

This couldnot come at a well time Kenya continues to face sporadic polio threats, specially in border counties like Mandera, Garissa, and Turkana, where refugee movement and cross-border trade increase the risk of transmission.

  • National Polio Immunization Days to cover zero-dose children.
  • Cross-border coordination through Somalia, Uganda, and South Sudan.
  • Deployment Of Community Health Workers for last-mile delivery in hard-to-reach counties.
  • Oral polio vaccine (OPV) campaigns integrated into Kenya’s routine immunization calendar.

Boosting Civic Health Infrastructure & Surveillance

  • Enhanced real-time polio surveillance in urban hubs like Nairobi and border zones.
  • Expansion of Cold Chain Infrastructure to rural hospitals.
  • Mobile Clinics to recover access in arid regions just as North Eastern Kenya.

Why Kenya? Regional Risk & Strategic Relevance

Kenya’s strategic location in the Horn of Africa makes it both a hub for disease control and a high-risk transit corridor. The funding is aligned through the Horn of Africa Polio Eradication Plan, following recent outbreaks in neighboring countries.

“Cross-Border vaccination corridors and real-time tracking will be game-changers for regional disease containment” says Dr. Moses Ouma, an Immunization expert based in Kisumu.

Counties like Busia, Garissa, Mandera and Turkana are set to see heightened surveillance and frequent campaign Rollouts.

Where Will the Money Come From?

The Sh58.5B fund is part of a international commitment led by WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, backed by partners such as:

  • The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (recent $500 million commitment)
  • Rotary International
  • United Arab Emirates
  • CDC and USAID

These organizations goal to eradicate polio by 2026 under the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) framework.
