According to Sowore, the legal action follows a series of events linked to his arrest after the October 2025 “Free Nnamdi Kanu” protest, which he described as a lawful exercise of fundamental human rights. He alleged that after the protest, security operatives pursued him across Abuja, fired shots at him, and arrested protesters. When he went to secure bail for those arrested, he himself was taken into custody at the Federal High Court.

Interference Prevented

Sowore said he was first detained at the former SARS detention facility at Abattoir, where he was kept in an open cell and developed malaria. He was later transferred about 40 kilometers outside Abuja to obtain bail from a judge, but claimed police interference prevented the judge from signing the bail bond.

Physically Assaulted Inside Court Premises

He further alleged that despite being granted bail, he was physically assaulted inside court premises, forcefully taken into a police vehicle, and remanded at Kuje Prison, where he spent four nights.

Establish Accountability

He described the actions of the police as a deliberate pattern of harassment, intimidation, and abuse of power, adding that his lawsuit is intended to establish accountability and create a legal record of the violations he claims to have suffered.
