Action to Protect
A New Way to Fight Fires
In Loire-Atlantique, the town of Saint-Mars-la-Jaille has decided to take serious measures to protect its precious forest from fires. The region is home to the Forêt du Gâvre, the biggest forest in the department, which has become more vulnerable due to climate change and longer, hotter dry periods.

This summer, with the risk of wildfires growing across France, local officials are not waiting for disaster to strike. The town has now installed several large water reserves in strategic spots near the forest.

Why These Water Reserves Matter
These new reserves can hold about 120 cubic meters of water. They will be used by firefighters to quickly get the water they need if a fire breaks out. this travels of public server and transport, and it is important for people. Without these reserves, firefighters would have to travel further to refill their equipment losing precious minutes that could allow flames to spread.
The mayor, Jean-Michel Claude, explained that protecting the forest is vital for both nature and the local community. “It’s our green lung,” he said, adding that the forest attracts walkers, families, and tourists throughout the year.

A Response to Real Risks
The idea for the water reserves came after the heatwaves and droughts of recent years showed how forests in western France are no longer safe from big fires — something that used to be rare in this part of the country.
Firefighters have also asked for more access points and better water sources to help them work faster when a fire starts. The town listened and invested about 20,000 euros to make this project happen.

Final Thought
With this step, Saint-Mars-la-Jaille hopes to be better prepared for the next heatwave. By installing these water reserves now, the town wants to give firefighters a better chance to stop flames before they cause major damage.
The mayor summed it up simply: “It’s our responsibility to protect this forest for everyone.”
