  • The Change. The advisory committee voted to recommend delaying the first dose until child is at least two months old for infants whose mothers have tested negative for the virus.
  • The Risk.Trump and his anti vaxxer Health Secretary RFK Jr claimed babies were at NO RISK of Hepatitis B. However for over 30 years the universal birth dose has served as a critical safety net because an estimated 50% of people with Hep B in the US are undiagnosed and unaware they are infectious. Before the universal birth dose 20,000 new borns year were infected now it’s fewer than 20.
  • High Stakes. Infants who contract the virus have a 90% chance of developing chronic Hep B which can lead to life-threatening issues like liver damage and cancer (Source 3.3).

MLK Jr Day Scrapped: Replaced by Trump’s Birthday at National Parks

In one of the most politically charged moves the Trump administration updated the list of federal holidays offering fee free entry to America’s National Parks.

  • Scrubbed Holidays. Martin Luther King Jr Day celebration (January) and Juneteenth (June 19th) which commemorates end of slavery were removed from the fee free list.
  • The Replacement. Added to list was Trump’s birthday (June 14th).
  • Political Targeting. Critics argue this move is part of a broader push to downplay America’s civil rights history and erase diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives on federal lands (Source 2.3). The administration however dubbed the new selection “patriotic fee free days” (Source 2.4).

The FIFA “Spoiled Toddler” Party

The bizarre weekend kicked off with a major FIFA event the World Cup Draw which critics suggested was explicitly engineered to flatter Donald Trump.

  • The Prizes. It began with Trump receiving a “made up peace prize” from FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
  • The Entertainment. The event ended with Village People performing YMCA culminating in an atmosphere likened to spoiled toddler’s birthday party.
  • Hypocrisy. The article points out the irony of FIFA putting on a highly political personalized event despite its previous stance against players wearing poppies or rainbow armbands to keep the “beautiful game” free from politics.

Judge Orders More Epstein Docs Released

A Federal judge, US District Judge Rodney Smith, ordered the release of more Epstein docs specifically transcripts from the grand jury hearings in the sex trafficking cases of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. • Context. The arrests occurred after Trump publicly insulted the state’s Democratic governor and a member of Congress Ilhan Omar who emigrated from Somalia (Source 1.3). Notably 95% of the Somali population in Minnesota are US citizens or naturalized (Source 1.3). The agency claimed the arrested individuals had charges or convictions for crimes including assault and domestic violence.

The Kennedy Center Honors’ “Trumpification”

Donald Trump concluded the weekend by seizing control of the Kennedy Center a prominent Washington cultural centre and personally reshaping its prestigious annual awards ceremony.

  • The Takeover. Trump overthrew and replaced the board of the center installing close political allies.
  • The Honorees. He claimed to be “97%” behind the choices which included actor Sylvester Stallone rock band Kiss, singer Gloria Gaynor, country singer George Strait and British actor Michael Crawford (best known as the hapless Frank Spencer and the Phantom of the Opera).
  • The Medal Change. The traditional iconic rainbow ribbon was dumped in favor of a new gaudy gold medal made by Tiffany&Co. The medals were presented by the President himself in the Oval Office (Source 4.4).
