Unauthorised Titles A Move to Restore Discipline and Constitutional Order
The Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos State has taken a decisive step to enforce discipline and uphold constitutional order among its traditional leaders by banning the unauthorised use of royal prefixes such as “Royal Highness” and “Royal Majesty” This firm directive was issued following an emergency meeting of the association’s Board of Trustees BoT and executive council .
The primary motivation behind this major resolution is to curb the growing disregard for the community’s established constitution and to preempt any potential misunderstandings or friction with the Lagos State Government and the host communities .

The Only Recognised Title Eze Ndigbo
In a joint statement signed by the BoT Chairman Chief Jonathan Nnaji and the President Chief Sunday Ude the leadership unequivocally reaffirmed that the title of Eze Ndigbo remains the only legitimate and constitutionally recognised traditional position within the Igbo community structure in Lagos .
The statement clarified that the proliferation of self-proclaimed royal titles and claims to non-existent positions most notably “Obi of Lagos” had caused unnecessary confusion within the Igbo community and among their hosts The leadership specifically warned that the rising trend of title abuse was detrimental to peaceful coexistence and the reputation of Ndigbo in Lagos .
The directive to all titleholders under the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos is clear and immediate “All Eze Ndigbo under the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos are hereby directed to desist from using prefixes such as ‘Royal Highness’ or ‘Royal Majesty’ with immediate effect” the leadership declared “The only recognised and constitutional title remains Eze Ndigbo” .
Constitutional Breach and Disciplinary Action
The leadership stressed the gravity of the directive cautioning that any individual who violates this new rule would be considered to have breached the organisation’s constitution and would consequently face appropriate disciplinary action .
Furthermore the leadership used the opportunity to dismantle the legitimacy of titles like “Obi of Lagos” It clarified that the community’s constitution does not provide for such designations describing the claims as misleading and potentially disruptive The public has been strongly urged to disregard any individual parading such self-styled titles with the association emphasising that the Igbo community in Lagos operates under a formal and recognised structure that is fully aligned with the laws of the state .
Call for Unity and Law-Abiding Conduct
Beyond the necessary regulation of traditional titles the association used its statement to appeal to all Igbo residents in Lagos State It called on the community to remain law-abiding foster unity and maintain harmonious relationships with all other ethnic groups residing in the state .
In a move to protect the interests of its members the association also advised all Igbo residents to exercise due diligence and caution in property transactions This includes verifying ownership documents and ensuring full compliance with the Lagos State development and planning regulations before acquiring land or commencing building construction .
“We urge our people to live peacefully remain responsible residents and conduct due diligence when acquiring properties in Lagos” the statement concluded underscoring the community’s commitment to responsible residency and good citizenship .
